GSEM calls for federal investment to grow region

GSEM has unveiled a ‘policy and investment blueprint’ ahead of the 2025 federal election.

The Greater South East Melbourne (GSEM) federal election platform lists 12 priority projects that alliance members hope will attract federal government interest and support, in a bid to boost jobs, skills, housing and liveability across the region.

These include plans to:

⦿ MAKE the region a pilot zone for a government-backed loan scheme to fully electrify homes.
⦿ EXPAND the Dandenong Employment Hub across neighbouring regions.
⦿ FUND ongoing work to establish a new international airport in Cardinia.
⦿ BOLSTER the region’s road, rail and active transport network.
⦿ DEVELOP ‘net zero precincts’ to speed up the shift to a net zero emissions economy, and
⦿ PUSH ahead with planning for the Caulfield to Rowville ‘Trackless Rapid Transport’ system.

“South east Melbourne is one of the fastest growing parts of Australia’s fastest growing city. Few other parts of Australia can boast the diversity, productivity and promise of our region,” GSEM Chair Simon McKeon said at the platform launch.

“With the greater south-east’s population forecast to surge past two million next decade, it’s crucial we make the most of existing infrastructure and services while also planning and building for the future.”

Mr McKeon said the region’s immense potential must be supported and unlocked.

“The GSEM region can be one of the nation’s great engine rooms for employment and growth. The Federal Government has a critical role to play making sure the south-east is supported to meet its full potential.”
